African National Carbon Registries: 2024 Update Report
A story of slow progress: The percentage of countries with active national carbon registries and those planning to establish national carbon registries increased marginally from 3.89% to 7.5% and 22.6% to 28.3% respectively.
Almost a year following our initial publication of the African Carbon Registries: A Snapshot, we present an updated overview of the evolving landscape of National Carbon Registries across Africa.
- Since our last research, two more countries (Cote d’ivoire and Gabon) have established National Carbon Registries, making the total of African Countries with National Registries, five; Ghana, Cote d’ivoire, South Africa, Tanzania and Gabon. The two new National carbon registries are not yet operational.
- Nigeria becomes the first African country to have a Sub-national Carbon Registry – with the establishment of the Lagos State Carbon Registry.
- As of November 2024, 16 African countries have indicated plans to establish national registries – This represents an increase from the previous count of 12 countries.
- Africa urgently needs robust carbon registries to unlock its vast carbon market potential. Without functional national registries to track, validate, and trade carbon credits, African nations risk missing out on significant carbon trading and climate financing opportunities. A national carbon registry is a foundational infrastructure needed to enable the participation of countries in the global carbon market.
